About Besom
"I tell you the truth. Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."
Matthew 25 verse 40
Why are we called "The Besom"?
The name 'Besom' derives from a broom made of twigs - hence Besom's strapline of 'Sweep away suffering'.
What are the origins of The Besom?
The Besom was founded by James Odgers in 1987, following a visit to Hong Kong where he was struck by the ever-widening gap between those of us who have and those who are in need.
There are now Besoms in many towns across the country. For more information about the work of The Besom nationally, click here.
What does The Besom in Witney do?
There are various ways in which people can get involved and make a difference to the lives of those on the margins of society - for example, by giving their money, time, skills or things.
Why do we do this?
When we look at the Gospels, we see Jesus showing compassion for the poor and needy.
We don't fund-raise or ask for specific items. When there is a need, we pray for God's provision.
